Michael of Rhodes: a Medieval Mariner
and his Manuscript "In 1401 a young man named Michael of Rhodes joined the Venetian navy as a
lowly galley oarsman. Over the next four decades, he sailed on more than 40 voyages and took part in
five major sea battles, rising through the ranks to become a trusted galley commander. Michael
documented his life and knowledge in a remarkable manuscript. Only recently rediscovered, it
chronicles Michael's service record and includes more than 200 pages of commercial and calendrical
computations, a beautifully illustrated section on astrology, some of the earliest surviving
portolan aids to navigation, and the world's first known treatise on shipbuilding." See here!

SOME PLACES TO STAY IN VENICE, ESPECIALLY FOR THE RELATIVELY
IMPECUNIOUS
- San Samuele--Salizzada San Samuele, 3358
San Marco Venice, 041-522-8045. When I stayed here several years ago its chief virtue
was its location very close to the vaporetto stop of the same name. The location is excellent; right by
Palazzo Grassi Now it appears (from photos on Web sites) to have been fixed up quite
a bit and it's still a one-star hotel.
-
Hotel Tivoli Near the Frari, the State Archives and the Scuola di San Rocco.
They don't take credit cards; sometimes will give an academic discount.
- The Albergo Al Sole, Santa Croce 136 Fondamenta Minotto, is a 3 or 4 star hotel
but has lots of discounts (in big old 15th century palace) so even if you are going
in high season it might be worth a look. Hotel is impressive, big buffet breakfast
(no need for lunch) and close to the train station but not suffering under the
influence.
-
Istituto San Giuseppe. Convent run by the Suore Figlie di San Giuseppe del Caburlotto. In
the Castello district. There are actually several convents with rooms to rent in Venice, many open to all.
This Web site lists only this one, which looks nice, but I've never stayed here.
-
A blog listing many convents with contact information
